Yep. For the second time this year I just got fired from my job.
My job – up until 2 hours ago – was to be the head writer/marketer for SoHelpful, my startup. I got the job 15 months ago when I started working on SoHelpful – Chiara Cokieng joined SoHelpful a few weeks ago and politely fired me today.
The message is always the same – “I can do that”
The last time I got fired was 4 months ago. I had written most of the code – some of it quite badly – for SoHelpful up to that point. Joey Mendoza has a ton more experience than I do and gradually started taking on more and more.
Then one day we had a discussion.
Me: Ok, that sounds great. On Monday I’ll start working on X.
Joey: You know … I can do X.
Me (speaking): Uhhh….ok, yeah, that sounds good.
Me (thinking): He can do X better than I can. So what am I going to do Monday?
This is just how Chiara fired me: “You know, I can write that new SoHelpful email course.”
And after reading the amazing job she did writing up the SoHelpful interview with Bruce McCarthy last week I have no choice but to step down. She can do the job better than I can.
Being a founder means reinventing yourself constantly
So now I need to find a new job. It won’t take more than 15 minutes, we have no shortage of problems. I just won’t get too comfortable – someone will come along soon and fire me from it too.
I still have my blog
Good thing I can still write here, on my personal blog. And I can even work on the code. They CAN’T fire me here.
