I just got fired – again

Yep. For the second time this year I just got fired from my job.

My job – up until 2 hours ago – was to be the head writer/marketer for SoHelpful, my startup. I got the job 15 months ago when I started working on SoHelpful – Chiara Cokieng joined SoHelpful a few weeks ago and politely fired me today.

The message is always the same – “I can do that”

The last time I got fired was 4 months ago. I had written most of the code – some of it quite badly – for SoHelpful up to that point. Joey Mendoza has a ton more experience than I do and gradually started taking on more and more.

Then one day we had a discussion.

Me: Ok, that sounds great. On Monday I’ll start working on X.
Joey: You know … I can do X.
Me (speaking): Uhhh….ok, yeah, that sounds good.
Me (thinking): He can do X better than I can. So what am I going to do Monday?

This is just how Chiara fired me: “You know, I can write that new SoHelpful email course.”

And after reading the amazing job she did writing up the SoHelpful interview with Bruce McCarthy last week I have no choice but to step down. She can do the job better than I can.

Being a founder means reinventing yourself constantly

So now I need to find a new job. It won’t take more than 15 minutes, we have no shortage of problems. I just won’t get too comfortable – someone will come along soon and fire me from it too.

I still have my blog

Good thing I can still write here, on my personal blog. And I can even work on the code. They CAN’T fire me here.

Can they?

Couldn’t agree with this statement even more! “Being a founder means reinventing yourself constantly.” As founders, it’s tempting to do everything ourselves. But that’s the quickest way to burning out!

My goal is always to make myself obsolete.. so far so good.

Ha! I had a feeling this was coming, as soon as I found out Chiara was coming on board.

That girl’s writing chops are second to NONE. Good move, and congrats on putting the ego aside and letting Chiara do what she is TRAINED to kick ass at.

I read EVERY comment and want to hear from you
