I love life as an entrepreneur but really dislike one aspect – exhaustion from not sleeping. When I get into “startup mode” I have a hard time sleeping past 3AM. I suddenly wake up, my mind racing.
A few months ago my friend Joel Gascoigne suggested Headspace. I’ve never been able to stick with meditating, but the idea of a structured process on my iPhone appealed to me – plus I had a real motivation. I listened to the trial lessons and liked the attitude of Andy (the narrator). So I decided to give it a shot and signed up for a year.
Today I finished my 65th Headspace session, a process that took about 3 months. Daily meditation is now part of my routine. I’m able to sleep until 4:30 or 5:00 every day and find it easier to deal with stress. Random thoughts and worries are less disruptive and I’m getting better at being “present” when I’m talking to others.
I hope meditation makes me a better listener, and a more patient, empathetic person. If so, I’ll be a better leader – and entrepreneur.
